Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IPL Photofacial?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photofacials represent a light therapy method aimed at eliminating sun spots, hyperpigmentation, redness, and overall skin discoloration. Additionally, they offer assistance with wrinkle reduction and unwanted body hair removal. This procedure effectively targets abnormal pigment on the skin while preserving the integrity of normal skin cells. Typically lasting between 20 to 30 minutes per session, the treatment typically requires 3-4 sessions to achieve visibly clearer skin.

What does IPL treat?

Thanks to IPL’s capacity to emit various wavelengths of light, it can effectively address a wide range of conditions.

  • Brown spots
  • Sun spots
  • Acne
  • Birthmarks
  • Red stretch marks
  • Spider veins
  • Unwanted hair
  • Freckles
  • Skin discoloration
  • Blood vessels
  • Rosacea
  • Reddish scars

What parts of the body can IPL treat?

IPL can be used to target problems all over the body, especially for freckles and age spots. The most common areas are:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Arms
  • Hands
  • Décolleté (lower neck area)
  • Chest
  • Individual Spots
How do I prepare for an IPL treatment?

Preparing for your IPL treatment involves taking necessary precautions to ensure optimal results. Here are some key things to avoid:

  • Anything that could darken your skin tone, as tanned skin makes it more challenging for the IPL treatment to effectively target pigmented areas. This could result in the treatment affecting healthy cells rather than just damaged cells like sunspots.

    • Avoid tanning beds and intense sun exposure for at least four weeks prior to your treatment.
    • Refrain from using tanning lotions in the four weeks leading up to your appointment.
    • Note: If you have a darker skin tone initially, IPL may not be the most suitable treatment for you. Schedule a consultation to explore alternative options tailored to your goals.
  • Blood thinners such as aspirin and ibuprofen unless prescribed (consult with your provider), as they can exacerbate bruising or “purpura” caused by the treatment.

  • Alcohol, as it can dry out your skin. Additionally, arriving under the influence can compromise your ability to provide consent for the procedure.

  • Avoid wearing makeup or skincare products on your skin when you arrive for your IPL session to allow your specialist a clear view of the treatment area.

How long does IPL take to heal?

IPL is highly favored by clients due to its minimal downtime post-procedure. You can typically resume your activities immediately after (while avoiding sun exposure). However, expect some temporary effects following the treatment:

  • Redness may persist for a few days to a week.
  • Mild bruising could last for a few weeks.

As the procedure targets and removes spots, you may notice darkened areas (those treated) for up to a week on the face and longer on the body. This process often resembles coffee grounds on the skin, as damaged cells rise to the surface and flake off.

Is IPL painful?

Numerous companies tout IPL as a painless procedure, often claiming superiority over competitors in terms of comfort. However, having undergone numerous treatments with various machines, I can attest that they generally are painless. Vascular treat may differ with a stronger heat sensation along with certain areas in hair removal.

For moderate to aggressive treatments, we provide numbing cream to alleviate discomfort. While we can keep the treatment light for your initial session, our goal is to ensure you achieve noticeable results.

How long do the results of IPL last?

In theory, IPL results should be long-lasting with proper care and sun protection. However, complete sun avoidance is impractical, and it’s essential to maintain a balanced lifestyle. If IPL successfully removes freckles, while the same ones may not reappear, new ones could develop, possibly by the following summer.

In some cases, persistent skin issues like age spots or rosacea stem from underlying chronic conditions or cellular malfunction. Additional maintenance therapies may be necessary to halt this process.

Consulting a licensed provider capable of diagnosing and treating the root cause of your skin discoloration is crucial for achieving desired results. This ensures a tailored approach to address your specific concerns effectively.

Is IPL or microneedling better?

The answer varies depending on your specific skin concerns. If you aim for smoother skin texture, microneedling is the go-to choice. This treatment stimulates collagen production, leading to softer and smoother skin, particularly effective for addressing acne scars. On the other hand, if your goal is to reduce imperfections like age spots or freckles, IPL is the preferred option.

Often, a combination of both treatments is recommended for a comprehensive skin rejuvenation. This approach is particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with redness and discoloration resulting from acne scars, providing an optimal solution for their skincare needs.
